Walter PL71r is a solid flashlight with an impressive output of 1800 lumens. Thanks to the adjustable focus, the light beam can be concentrated into a smaller spot or spread over a larger area. This mechanism is controlled via the sliding head – pulling it away from the body focuses the beam on a smaller area, pushing it back spreads the beam. The maximum beam distance is 230 m.
There are several brightness levels which change in descending order (RAMP DOWN). The light is switched on with a single press, and with subsequent presses you gradually reduce the brightness from 1800 lm down to 10 lm (the so‑called moon mode, which is great, for example, for reading in a tent). If you need a quick return to high output, just double‑press the switch quickly.
A long press of the ON/OFF button switches the light to strobe. In a similar way you can switch to the beacon mode, and with a quick double press the flashlight returns to a steady maximum output.
The individual modes are also variably programmable. You enter the programming mode after switching the flashlight on. Four seconds after activation, press the button 4 times; if the flashlight blinks 4 times, it is ready for programming.
The flashlight features its own charging system for an 18650 battery. The battery is included and is charged directly in the flashlight via a micro USB cable – which is also included. The rear cap with the button is equipped with an LED charge level indicator. If the voltage drops below 2.9 V, the flashlight will automatically turn off and on every minute – in this state it must be recharged without delay. Battery life depends on the light mode. At maximum output you don’t need to be afraid of the dark for approximately two hours and fifteen minutes. If you only want to read under the covers or in a tent, the battery will keep shining for over three days (80 hours).
The PL71r has a durable housing made of anodised aircraft‑grade aluminium and offers IPX4 protection. This means you can use it in the rain, but it is not suitable for diving. This protection also includes resistance to minor impacts.
