Thermal Imaging - CHOOSE A SUBCATEGORY

How Does It Work?

A thermal imaging camera captures heat (infra-red) radiation and it can turn it into a thermal image – a thermogram. It offers the same picture both during the day and night. Not even a rain or fog can stop it. It doesn’t need any additional illuminator (unlike the night vision units) and it works in complete darkness. This technology was initially used by the military but it has found its way into the civilian market thanks to its wide range of uses, including home security and hunting.

Thermal Devices For Hunting

Thermal devices allow hunters to be more effective which is a definitive plus. Wildlife won’t even be able to hide from you in tall grasses or thick bushes. It also makes tracking of wounded animals much easier. A proper thermal unit for hunting has to meet a number of important standards. Its refresh rate shouldn’t go under 25 Hz. The resolution of the thermal core is equally as important. The higher resolution allows you to see more details. The size of the objective lens affects the detection range. High-end models are capable of detecting a human being from more than 2 km.

Thermal Scopes

Thermal scopes are outfitted with their own reticles and can be attached directly to your weapon, just like any regular riflescope. These models have to be highly durable to withstand the recoils of hunting calibers which is sadly projected in their price. PARD thermal devices are amongst the most popular models. Shooters especially like their lightweight and compact designs. The brand new DALI thermal scopes are almost unrecognizable from traditional riflescopes and you can attach them to your rifle with a set of standard mount rings.

Thermal Monoculars

A thermal monocular is a lightweight handheld device that can be used to observe your surroundings. Its compact size means you can carry it in your pocket without any problems. A number of models from Hikvision and Night Pearl are a perfect example and they offer great value for their price. Let’s not forget a wide range of high-tech products from Infiray.

Thermal Clip-On Sights

A thermal clip-on sight is a compromise between a scope and a monocular. You can just carry it with you and take it out when it gets darker and start observing your surroundings. It only takes a few seconds to mount it in front of your scope if you spot your target. The option to use it as a spotting monocular is really useful because you don’t have to hold your rifle the entire time to just spot something. These devices utilize the reticle and magnification of your scope and you don’t have to zero them again.
