PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Subtle design, semi-automatic firing mode, extreme performance. These are just some of the many advantages of the brand-new PCP air rifle from the workshops of the renowned company Taipan Airguns.

As is clear at first glance, this bullpup is not just another continuation of the Veteran series. This is a completely new air rifle and it does not take over a single part from previous models. That is exactly why the designers gave it a short and fitting name Taipan SLASH.

Semi-Auto

The key feature of the new Taipan is clearly the semi-automatic firing mode. After many years of research, the designers managed to develop and patent a revolutionary valve that is characterised by exceptional opening and closing speed. The result is high performance with minimal air consumption - approximately 7-9 cm3/J. The unprecedented performance in semi-automatic mode also allows the use of Slug type ammunition.

PCP system

SLASH is characterised in particular by the unusual placement of the air cylinder in the stock area. The carbon bottle has a capacity of 300cc, which may seem little to some, but thanks to the minimal air consumption and maximum pressure of up to 300 bar it provides a really high number of shots per fill. The current pressure in the cylinder is shown on a clear manometer.

Accuracy and magazine

Taipan air rifles are renowned for their unrivalled accuracy – and this is no exception. This is mainly thanks to the barrel from the famous Czech company CZUB, which has specialised in the production of firearms since 1936.

Taipan SLASH offers the option of changing the calibre. This process requires the replacement of several internal components and therefore considerable experience with PCP systems. Always follow the manual or instructional video.

Accuracy is also helped by the very construction of the air rifle. Thanks to the rigid metal frame and minimal tolerances of the individual components, any vibrations and flexing during shooting have been suppressed.

The last feature ensuring high accuracy is the new magazine – it is not pre-tensioned by a spring and therefore there is no risk of deformation of pellets or slugs during cycling. A major advantage compared to other semi-auto air rifles is the possibility of easily removing the magazine by sliding the lever above the grip. In addition, it holds projectiles up to 13mm long.

Design

Among other specific features of the new Taipan is its low-profile design, with an overall height of only 17 cm without a mounted riflescope. The barrel is shrouded along its entire length and at its end there is a highly effective integrated sound moderator. To install an external moderator, an adapter must be purchased.

There are several rows of M-LOK slots in the fore-end for mounting any accessories, and a standard Picatinny rail canted by 20 MOA is used for mounting the riflescope, which makes it easier to set the optics for long-distance shooting. As is currently fashionable, there is also a standardised AR-15 type grip, so you can easily replace it.

For comfortable shooting even at low temperatures, the SLASH is fitted with an ergonomically shaped polymer cheekpiece with rubberised surface finish and the butt pad is height adjustable.

The air rifle features two types of safety – a classic manual safety located in front of the trigger and a second automatic safety that prevents firing when the magazine is removed.

Taipan Slash Text 5

Note 1: The package includes 2 magazines. One is intended for classic pellets (magazine with a hole on the rear surface) and the other is intended for slug type ammunition (without a hole). They differ in the diameter of the cartridge chamber. Always use the appropriate magazine. Attention, to ensure correct operation it is necessary to carefully push each round past the plastic ball inside the magazine.

Note 2: Every semi-automatic PCP air rifle currently available on the market is constantly in a fully cocked (loaded) state, which can be dangerous during handling of the gun and at the same time the internal components can wear out faster. The charging handle on the right side is used both for the initial loading (cocking) of the air rifle and for subsequent unloading (deactivation). Simply pull the handle and hold it firmly, pull the trigger and carefully move the handle back to its original position. This unloads the gun.

Note 3: We strongly advise against making any adjustments to the configuration of the air rifle, especially the trigger mechanism and pressure regulator settings. Both systems are factory-set to ensure proper operation of the semi-automatic mode. Incorrect adjustment of the trigger and regulator may cause the air rifle to jam.

Note 4: The air rifle is factory-set to a muzzle energy at which, with the test ammunition used (listed in the parameter table), it achieves the best accuracy and optimal air consumption. The values in the table below can be achieved simply by re-adjusting the pressure regulator. To increase / decrease the possible range, you can purchase the so-called Power Kit. It consists of 4 components that need to be replaced in the air rifle. The maximum recommended regulator pressure is 170 bar. To reach a higher pressure, up to 220 bar, you can purchase a tuning regulator.

I have no problem to spend a justified price for a good product, but expect from the seller that complete information is presented before a product is released. Now I have to buy another addon just to shoot 10 bars higher (180bars) and am not even sure that the manufacturer/seller might tell you in a few months that you need to purchase another pricey part to reach initial stated performance.

  • Overall build quality and performance.
  • Especially positively I want to highlight the accuracy using heavy “slugs”.
  • There is no plug for the filling port, which means its exposed to moisture and dust all the time.
  • The magazines get small scratches/dents from the metal balls holding it in place. I use mainly the slug magazine and it looks after +/- 200 shots already quite worn out. Overall quality of the magazines are otherwise solid. I experienced no cycling issues, so far.
  • The pressure gauges are not really exact, and deviating at least 10 bars from actual pressure. I had the same experience on FX airguns, and cannot understand why the big manufacturers put low quality gauges on their otherwise high quality airguns. 10 bars might not be an issue for bottle pressure, but when adjusting the regulator, especially at the edge of the regulator limit I want precise readings.
  • Biggest issue I have with the Taipan Slash is not the airgun itself, its the lack of information given in advance what parts you need to reach the promoted power levels. I purchased the power kit together with the airgun (Slash standard version) totaling in cost of almost 2600€. One month later Balistas adds to the product description that you need a high power regulator to set your rifle over 170 bar. “Only” another 190 bucks (with shipping) to get the power promoted. No info whatsoever in September that you also need another regulator to use the full potential of the gun. Two pages of promotional text in the user manual but nothing crucial like minimum and maximum pressure limits of the regulator? Why is the hp regulator not included from the beginning, given that the difference is only 40 bars higher achievable pressure?

  • Precision, semi auto, light weight
  • The cheekpiece - a piece of plastic that is not fixed and falls down, it really needed to be solved better

The cheek rest on the new pieces is already screwed on and it even has a taipan download available on the website, which is great. The magazines only get the paint scratched on the side, but it has no impact on the function at all, just as Maik says. Yes, at first the information regarding the power increase was a bit confusing, but now the description of the power kit and the weapons is perfect.

  • Really robust design
  • precise and extremely powerful shooting from the SLUG
  • low weapon weight
  • The uniqueness of the semi-auto design
  • the possibility of unloading the weapon which other semi-autos do not have and it is a great safety feature just like 2 safeties
