You can attach the retractor to your backpack or belt using the eyelet, through which you can thread either a carabiner or a cord. Or you can use the belt clip on the back of the retractor.
You then attach even a heavier tool to the carabiner with the safety cord made of Dyneema material. You can extend it up to a distance of 122 cm. When moving through dense brush, your gear will not shift at all, because it is secured by a lock. Once you release it, you can handle the tool on the cord without any worries.
However, you must not forget about maintenance, especially if the retractor gets submerged in water. From time to time, simply rinse it with clean water, dry it thoroughly and then apply lubricant to the pins and moving parts.
