You can attach the retractor to your backpack or belt using the loop, through which you thread either a carabiner or a cord. Or you can use the belt clip on the back of the retractor.
You then attach a lighter tool to the carabiner with the safety lanyard made of Dyneema material. You can extend it up to a distance of 91.5 cm. When walking through thick brush, your gear will not move at all because it is secured by a lock. When you release the lock, you can safely handle the tool you have on the lanyard.
However, you must not forget about maintenance, especially if you get the retractor wet. From time to time, simply rinse it with clean water, thoroughly dry it and then apply lubricant to the pins and moving parts.
