We present one of the most advanced air rifles under the sun from the British manufacturer Daystate, which in recent years has been focusing on producing top‑class air rifles packed with electronics and the highest‑quality components.
It was Daystate that in the 1970s created the first modern PCP air rifle ever, so you can rely on the quality and functionality of their products without hesitation.
The result of many years of experience is the PCP air rifle Daystate Alpha Wolf, which at first glance impresses with its beautiful, smoothly shaped laminated stock in a red‑black finish. Unlike laminated stocks from other manufacturers, its surface is almost mirror‑gloss. The grip area is roughened for a more secure hold.
The most crucial feature of this model, however, is the all‑pervading electronics. On the touch display you can set the overall power of the air rifle, the pressure in the regulator, the calibre and length of the barrel, the weight (grains) of the ammunition used, the velocity of the fired projectile, the hammer impulse time in microseconds, and much more. All settings can be saved to user profiles, allowing you to create preset configurations for different purposes.
All electronics are powered by a LiPo battery hidden under the butt pad, which keeps the rifle powered for hundreds to thousands of shots. Charging is via a USB‑C slot located in the stock near the touch display, and the package also includes a USB‑C / USB‑C cable. Power consumption is reduced by the automatic display shut‑off function, whose delay can be set from 30 seconds to 90 minutes.
If that is still not enough, you will certainly be surprised by the built‑in chronograph at the end of the barrel. The air rifle will therefore always tell you the exact velocity of the fired projectile.
The precise 600mm barrel is protected by a pre‑tensioned carbon shroud, which at the same time stiffens it and reduces oscillation during the shot. At the muzzle there is a standard 1/2UNF thread for a sound moderator.
Consistently accurate shooting is also supported by one of the highest‑quality pressure regulators from Huma‑Air, located above the joint between the 480cc air cylinder and the rifle’s action. It is of course externally adjustable.
For mounting a riflescope, the rifle is fitted with a sliding elevated Picatinny rail canted by 3° forward/downward, which makes it easier to set up the optics for long‑range shooting. There is also a spirit level on the elevated base, so you will always know that the riflescope is vertically aligned with the barrel. The sliding base is mounted on a standard 11mm rail, so if you have a sufficiently high 11mm scope mount, you can use that as well. Another 4 Picatinny rails are located on the sides of the barrel, on the underside of the fore‑end, and on the underside of the stock below the display.
Just like the manual safety, the magazine is ambidextrous. The Daystate developers even came up with the option of joining two magazines using magnets, which doubles the capacity. After emptying the first one, you simply slide it slightly and you can continue shooting.
Virtually the entire rifle is adapted for both right‑handed and left‑handed shooters. The sidelever and the sliding cheek piece can be swapped to the other side within moments. A standard set of hex keys is sufficient for all rifle adjustments, and the two smallest ones for trigger adjustment and possible removal of the touch display are included.
Our experience: The Alpha Wolf is probably the best‑built air rifle we have had here so far. All materials feel very high‑quality. All moving parts (sidelever, trigger, safety) operate with an incredibly smooth action without any snagging, the rifle fully adapts even to left‑handed shooters, and it offers a host of small yet useful features – for example, we were surprised by the spirit level in the sliding base with Picatinny rail, or the easily accessible yet cleverly hidden USB‑C power slot. The most beautiful feature, however, is definitely the glossy laminated stock, which can truly be described as a masterpiece.
Note 1: The 2022 version is equipped with the older valve. You can find more information about the current "Ultra Firing Valve" on the official Daystate website.
Note 2: The manufacturer continuously releases software updates for this air rifle. For this you need to use the DTD adapter (not compatible with MacOS). The rifle, however, works perfectly well even with the older software.
