Historical original

The M3 submachine gun was designed by George Hyde in 1941 as a simply manufactured replacement for the more expensive Thompson. The American Army adopted it in December 1942 under the designation Submachine Gun, Caliber .45, M3; serial production began in 1943. The historical weapon used the .45 ACP cartridge, with a conversion to 9 mm also available. Due to its appearance resembling a hand grease gun, it gained the nickname “Grease Gun” and was used during the Second World War, for example by tank and airborne units.
