AK-47, referred to as the Kalashnikov automatic rifle model 1947, was a Soviet assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. Development culminated in 1947, and the weapon was adopted into service by the Soviet Army in 1949. The historical original used the 7.62 × 39 mm cartridge.
